KEY VERSE: “Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.” – (Lamentations 3:56)
TEXT: Lamentations 3:55-58
I called on Your name, O Lord,
From the lowest pit.
56 You have heard my voice:
“Do not hide Your ear
From my sighing, from my cry for help.”
57 You drew near on the day I called on You,
And said, “Do not fear!”
58 O Lord, You have pleaded the case for my soul;
You have redeemed my life.

According to Benny Hinn, there was a story circulated during World War I about a British soldier caught one night creeping secretly back to his tent from a nearby bush. He was then charged by his commanding officer with holding communication with enemies. The young soldier pleaded that he had gone to pray to God. His commander then commanded him in anger to get down on his knees to convince him by praying like he had never prayed before. The young soldier instantly knelt down and prayed powerfully like he had never done before. There was a hushed silence after the young soldier’s amen. “You may go, I believe your story. If you hadn’t drilled often, you couldn’t have done so well at review.”
The text today deals with the testimony of Prophet Jeremiah about how God graciously answered his prayers for deliverance from the dungeon into which wicked people had cast him. He said God heard his cries for help and deliverance, and assured him that he should not be afraid of any personality. If the prophet had not been praying fervently before the trouble came, the present adverse situation would have quickly got him discouraged and despondent.
Just as evangelism is a spiritual exercise for believers and the word of God a spiritual food, prayer is the spiritual breath of saints. It is the breath of regenerated souls that helps to draw in the gracious air from the throne of mercy. It is a divine indicator that a believer is still spiritually alive.
God never forgets His people. Through prayer, believers can intercede for others, draw strength from the Lord, and receive healing for sicknesses, access deliverance from oppression, get promotion, success and favour. Sinners can be prayed into the Kingdom and backsliders can receive pardon and restoration.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Prayer is the spiritual oxygen for God’s children.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalm 1-10
