PORT HARCOURT – The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt has overturned a 2024 judgment that led to the de-recognition of His Royal Highness, King Hope Daminabo Dan-Opusingi, reinstating him as the Amayanabo of Opu-Kula/Singi-Ama in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The appellate court, in a unanimous decision in suit No. CA/PH/284/2024, ruled that the lower court judgment delivered on May 6, 2024, by Justice Okogbulem Gbasam was flawed and constituted a miscarriage of justice. The previous ruling had directed the Rivers State Government to withdraw its recognition of King Opusingi, a decision that sparked protests among his supporters.
In response, King Opusingi and members of the royal dynasty challenged the ruling at the Court of Appeal, which has now nullified the earlier decision and restored his status.
Reacting to the judgment, King Opusingi described the ruling as a victory for justice and thanked his community for their support. He urged them to celebrate the outcome, which he said reflects divine intervention against efforts to undermine his leadership.
