On Thursday, a Federal High Court in Abuja prolonged the interim order issued on 15 December, preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from taking any measures against the 26 members of the Rivers House of Assembly who switched allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The extension was granted by Justice Donatus Okorowo in response to an application filed by Steve Adehi, SAN, representing the embattled lawmakers. Supported by Ken Njemanze, SAN, who appeared on behalf of the Rivers House of Assembly, Mr. Adehi’s application was opposed by Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN, the counsel for the PDP.
Despite the opposition, Justice Okorowo acknowledged the discretionary power of the court under Order 26, Rule 10 of the Federal High Court, agreeing to grant the plea in the interest of justice.
