Controversial hip-hop artist Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has avoided a three-month jail sentence after opting to pay a N30,000 fine.
The sentence was handed down on Tuesday by Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo at the Magistrate Court in Ifo, under the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State. The court found Portable guilty of assault, with the offense reportedly committed on November 18, 2022, around 11:00 a.m.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Olumide Awoleke told the court that Okikiola’s actions constituted a criminal offense under Nigerian law. The musician was given the option to pay the fine in lieu of serving the prison term, which he did immediately.
The case has sparked renewed debate over celebrity conduct and accountability in Nigeria.
