Popular Nigerian comedian, KOBaba, has announced the commencement of his annual Under-15 football tournament in Port Harcourt, aimed at promoting grassroots football and showcasing young talents.
The competition, scheduled to kick off in September at St. Andrews State School, Diobu, will feature teenage players competing for prizes and opportunities to be scouted by professionals.
Speaking during the screening of teams and players, KOBaba said the initiative was designed to take teenagers off the streets, discourage involvement in drugs and cultism, and channel their energy into sports and education. He described the tournament as part of his commitment to giving back to society, adding that his passion for nurturing young talent inspired the programme.
Recounting his own upbringing in Diobu, KOBaba urged the players to embrace hard work, discipline, and dedication as keys to success.
Winners of the tournament will receive ₦1 million, while the second and third-placed teams will get ₦500,000 and ₦200,000 respectively. The best player and best goalkeeper will each receive ₦50,000 and football gear amongst other prizes. In addition, coaches of the semi-finalist teams will be placed on monthly salaries until December as part of KOBaba’s empowerment plan.
The screening exercise attracted sports enthusiasts, ex-professionals, coaches, and fans from across the state.
