A cleric was yesterday arrested for attempting to settle a defilement case instead of reporting to the Police.
Chairperson of the Rivers State chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, Adata Bio-Briggs disclosed this in a statement Today.
She reiterated that a crime is an offence against the State and not the church or family.
We gathered that the incident occured in Eleme local government area of the state.
She said, “Yesterday a Reverend was arrested for attempting to settle a defilement matter instead of reporting to the police.
“We keep shouting it, a crime is an offence against the State, not the church or family. Do not make yourself an accomplice, you can easily be charged as an accomplice.
“When I asked him to go to the police to report the incident and the role he played I knew he would be arrested because you don’t negotiate crime, allow the court do their Job. By the VAPP Law victims of rape are entitled to compensation.
