A Civil society organization, Save Democracy Vanguard, has petitioned the United Nations over what it describes as a deepening political crisis in Rivers State, Nigeria, warning of an imminent collapse of democratic governance.
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the group, through its Executive Director Ali Mohammed Ali, accused the Nigerian federal government of supporting actions that undermine constitutional rule in the oil-rich state. The group alleged that the recent imposition of emergency rule and the replacement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara with a sole administrator were carried out without due process.
“Democracy in Nigeria is on the red line,” the group warned, calling for urgent international intervention. “What we are witnessing in Rivers State is a complete deviation from the democratic process.”
The petition urges the UN and the global community to take immediate steps to prevent what it termed the dismantling of Nigeria’s constitutional order under the silent watch of federal authorities.
