Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital is embracing MURALS – a form of public art and large painting directly applied or installed on walls, ceilings or other permanent structures.
Public constructions in different parts of the city such as Ikwerre Road and Aba Road are wearing a vibrant look, mirroring the deeply diverse composition of the capital. These murals in Elanhub’s view are significant in that they make this art form accessible to every resident of the city.
Elanhub took a closer look by interracting with the one of the artists behind the lively visual expressions.
Kingsley Matthew prides himself a “Graffiti King.” He describes the murals on Ikwerre Road as Doodles – a type of free form art with concrete representational meaning. For Kingsley, the doodles or scribbles, which are made up of random, abstract interconnected lines, symbolise Peace, Love and Unity.
Take a look at the murals on Ikwerre Road and listen to Elanhub’s Daniel Whyte’s conversation with Kingsley Matthew:
Port Harcourt just like many cities around the world is adversely impacted by COVID-19, the deadly pandemic that has claimed the lives of millions around the world. The introduction murals in strategic parts of the city for many is quite inspiring and may trigger a renewed focus on art, in a city that is known for its robust cultural heritage.
