About 14 persons have been confirmed dead after a driver with a Toyota Camry rammed into bystanders who were watching the annual Biker’s Carnival, a part of the activities for Carnival Calabar.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the vehicle who had illegally paid security operatives to access the carnival routes which were restricted to only participating motorbikes and official vehicles, was seen spraying money while driving recklessly.
The incident which occrued on Tuesday the 27th of December, led the governor of the state, Ben Ayade to cancel the Biker’s Carnival. The Governor who also visited the hospital where injured victims were taken to, also paid the hospital bills.
Despite calls by some persons to cancel the Carnival in honour of the dead victims, the related activities like Miss Africa and the Carnival held on Tuesday and Wednesday respectfully.
