The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a major change to the format of its flagship competition, revealing that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will now be staged every four years.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe disclosed the decision on Saturday during a press conference in Morocco, following a meeting of the organisation’s executive committee. The announcement came on the eve of the 2025 AFCON tournament.
Motsepe also revealed that CAF is considering the introduction of an African Nations League as part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening football development and competitiveness across the continent.
