All occupants of an 18-seater commercial bus narrowly escaped death on Friday when the vehicle caught fire in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The bus, which was reportedly en route from Owerri in Imo State to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was fully loaded with passengers when the incident occurred. Eyewitnesses said the fire erupted suddenly while the bus was in motion.
“The fire was massive and started without warning. It was clearly an electrical fault,” a witness told our correspondent. “Passengers, including the driver and conductor, had to jump out through the windows and doors to escape.”
Though some passengers sustained minor injuries while escaping, no fatalities were recorded. The fire quickly engulfed the entire vehicle, leaving it completely destroyed before emergency services could intervene.
Another eyewitness, identified simply as Tony, confirmed the vehicle was traveling from Owerri to Port Harcourt when the blaze broke out. Passengers watched helplessly from a distance as the vehicle burned to ashes, many expressing gratitude for surviving the incident.
