Tensions are rising in Rivers State following the alleged shooting death of a University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) student by police officers.
Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level student, was reported missing on April 16, 2025, after attending a football match. According to his family, they were contacted the next day by a police officer using Akpakpan’s phone, instructing them to visit the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
At the CID, officers informed the family that Akpakpan had been shot and killed by a military officer inside a mini-bus — a version of events the family disputes. They further claim they were denied access to formally identify his body and accuse the police of attempting to cover up the circumstances surrounding his death.
The case has triggered widespread public outrage, with growing demands for an independent investigation and accountability for those responsible.
