Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi announced his move on Tuesday, December 31, 2025, in Enugu, the Enugu State capital, alongside other prominent political leaders from the South-East geopolitical zone.
Speaking at the declaration, Obi and the South-East leaders said the decision followed months of wide-ranging consultations and strategic engagements. They explained that their defection to the ADC was aimed at building a united opposition platform capable of addressing Nigeria’s current challenges.
According to them, the move is part of a broader effort to collaborate with opposition figures across the country to “rescue Nigeria from the poor governance” of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
