The internal turmoil rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified as a fresh factional alignment within the party leadership has announced the suspension of the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, alongside five other members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
The move, reportedly championed by a group loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, marks a new escalation in the power struggle tearing through the opposition party.
According to the faction, the suspended officials were punished over alleged misconduct and actions deemed harmful to the stability of the PDP. The group, believed to be aligned with the camp of former Imo State governorship candidate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, declared that the suspensions were necessary to safeguard the future of the party.
However, the decision is expected to trigger strong pushback from other influential blocs within the PDP who continue to recognize Damagum as the legitimate acting leader of the party. Political observers warn that the latest development may worsen the already widening rift between loyalists of presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and those aligned with Wike.
As tensions rise, party members and supporters nationwide await official clarification from the PDP’s top hierarchy, amid fears that the escalating power tussle could further weaken the party ahead of future electoral battles.
