Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of slain Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has been named the new Supreme Leader of Iran.
Mojtaba, long regarded as a powerful figure within Iran’s political and religious establishment, was frequently seen alongside his father over the years. Though he never held an elected or formally appointed government position, he was widely believed to wield significant influence behind the scenes.
In 2019, the United States government sanctioned Mojtaba Khamenei, accusing him of representing his father in an official capacity despite not holding a formal role in the Iranian government.
His emergence as Supreme Leader marks a major shift in Iran’s leadership and could have significant implications for the country’s political direction and relations with the international community.
