A massive new oil spill has hit Kpean community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, following a major leak from Well 14 in the Yorla field, operated under OML 11.
The spill, which residents say is gushing uncontrollably, has unleashed large volumes of crude oil into the surrounding environment. Community members report that the pollution is three to five times more severe than the previous incident on August 3, 2025 — a spill that was never cleaned up.
Thick layers of crude are now spreading across farmlands, creeks, and local water bodies, destroying crops, contaminating fishing areas, and threatening livelihoods. The worsening contamination has also sparked growing fears about long-term health risks and irreversible environmental damage.
Residents are urgently calling on relevant government agencies and environmental regulators to intervene immediately to contain the spill and begin remediation.
The latest incident comes at a critical moment, as the Federal Government continues discussions with Ogoni stakeholders on the possible resumption of oil production in the region — a move already fraught with tension and concerns from affected communities.
