RIVERS STATE, NIGERIA – A massive fire explosion has destroyed two flow stations near Cawthorne Channel in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State, resulting in significant damage and loss of lives.
Details remain unclear, but a viral online video suggests that the incident occurred approximately 30 nautical miles off the Bonny coastline. The affected area, known for its concentration of oil and gas facilities, sits on the western edge of Bonny LGA, bordering Degema LGA.
Footage recorded by local residents aboard an outboard-powered speedboat shows both flow stations engulfed in flames.
The video also shows military-escorted personnel, allegedly from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), arriving at the scene. This has sparked speculation that the affected facilities may belong to the NNPCL, which could be assessing the situation.
As of now, neither the NNPCL nor any international oil company (IOC) has issued an official statement regarding the incident.
