The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment.
The ruling comes after the court found Kanu guilty on all counts brought against him by the Federal Government. In Thursday’s judgment, the court specifically highlighted count seven, which involved importing a radio transmitter into Nigeria and concealing it inside a container of used household items without declaring it to authorities.
Delivering the verdict, the trial judge stated that Kanu’s actions went beyond mere agitation, noting that the self-proclaimed freedom fighter “has done more harm than good, even to his own people.” The judge added that Kanu’s conduct constitutes terrorism and affirmed that “he must be treated as such.”
The sentencing marks a significant moment in the government’s ongoing efforts to tackle separatist agitation and security threats in the country.
