The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over reports that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Amupitan, is planning to update the names of Senator David Mark’s National Working Committee (NWC) on the commission’s portal.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the party described the alleged move as a potential attempt to divert public attention from growing calls for the chairman’s resignation. Critics, according to the ADC, have increasingly questioned the neutrality of the INEC leadership, alleging political bias in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The ADC argued that any action perceived as politically motivated or improperly timed would further erode public confidence in the electoral body. The party stressed that Nigerians expect INEC to operate with strict adherence to the law and remain above partisan considerations.
“Developments of this nature only deepen public concern about the neutrality, transparency, and credibility of the electoral process,” the statement noted, warning that such actions would naturally attract scrutiny from citizens.
The party called on INEC to demonstrate calm, openness, and institutional integrity in handling the situation, urging the commission to avoid steps that could be interpreted as managing public perception rather than addressing substantive issues.
According to the ADC, trust in electoral institutions remains critical to Nigeria’s democracy and must not be undermined by avoidable controversies.
The party further highlighted its growing national presence, noting increased public interest in its activities and internal processes. It described this as a reflection of Nigerians’ rising engagement with alternative political platforms.
ADC also urged its members to remain focused, law-abiding, and committed to democratic principles amid the unfolding developments.
As of the time of filing this report, INEC has not issued an official response to the allegations.
