A former military head of state, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has officially confirmed that the late Chief Moshood Abiola (MKO) won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
Babangida’s admission was documented in his autobiography, A Journey in Service, launched in Abuja on Thursday, February 20, 2025.
During the book presentation, former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who reviewed the publication, revealed that Babangida acknowledged Abiola, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, had met all electoral requirements, including securing the majority vote and the necessary geographical spread to be declared president.
He described the annulment of the election as the most difficult decision of his career but expressed relief that former President Muhammadu Buhari posthumously recognized Abiola’s victory and conferred on him the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), an honor reserved for Nigerian presidents.
