Protesting workers have reportedly shut down operations at the $10 billion Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Train 7 Project in Bonny, Rivers State, over unresolved tax-related grievances.

The workers, mainly junior staff of the SCD Joint Venture (Saipem, Chiyoda, and Daewoo), accused the company of making illegal deductions of up to N150,000 monthly from their salaries under the guise of taxation. They also demanded the immediate issuance of their tax receipts and Tax Identification Numbers (TINs), which they said have been denied them for the past two years despite the deductions.

The aggrieved staff picketed the company’s administrative building from Thursday last week through Sunday, vowing not to vacate the premises until their demands were met.

The workers maintained that the deductions, made in the name of tax clearance, were unlawful without proper documentation and remittance.
