The Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Amasenibo Hon. Engr. Abinye Blessing Pepple, has approved the immediate commencement of a mandatory profiling exercise for all commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as okada riders, within the LGA.
The decision was reached following a strategic stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Chief of Staff, Mr. Soparagha Jumbo, and led by the Chief Security Officer, Warisenibo Hon. Prince I. Wilcox.
The meeting brought together leaders and representatives of okada unions to address key safety and regulatory concerns affecting motorcycle operations in the area.
As part of the new directive, all commercial motorcycle operators will undergo a formal registration and profiling process. This will include the introduction of standardized identification vests to clearly distinguish registered riders from unauthorized operators.
The unions have also been directed to submit a comprehensive list of their members within two weeks to support the creation of an accurate and credible database.
According to the council, the initiative is aimed at improving road safety, reducing accidents, regulating the number of motorcycles operating in Bonny, and controlling the influx of riders into the LGA. It is also expected to enhance security coordination and accountability within the transport sector.
