The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has announced that President Bola Tinubu will commission the Bonny-Bodo Road project in November 2025.
Umahi disclosed this during an inspection visit to the project site, where he lauded construction giant Julius Berger for what he described as “exceptional” execution and pace of work. He revealed that 5.3 kilometres of concrete pavement have been completed, with ongoing preparations to ensure the section is sturdy enough to support a presidential helicopter landing for the commissioning ceremony.
“I’ve checked the concrete. It’s very durable. What remains is for them to quickly lay the stone base and apply a 40mm layer of asphalt,” Umahi said. He stressed that all work must be completed within the ₦200 billion contract sum, warning that no cost variation would be entertained.
Umahi added that plans are underway to expand the road into a dual carriageway linking the East-West Road and to install solar-powered streetlights. He also hinted at a possible operator-maintain model for the long-term sustainability o
The Bonny-Bodo Road, which includes nine mini-bridges and three major bridges, is already open to limited traffic and is expected to greatly enhance connectivity between Bonny Island and the mainland in Rivers State once fully completed.
