The Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Hon. Abinye Blessing Pepple says robust security measures have been activated ahead of the temporary opening of the Bonny–Bodo Road approved by the Federal Government for November 30, 2025.
Pepple gave the assurance on Saturday, November 15, during a Town Hall Meeting convened by the council to brief stakeholders on the modalities for accessing the long-anticipated road. The strategic link, which connects Bonny to Gokana and Tai LGAs and onward to Port Harcourt, is expected to ease movement and boost economic activities.
He announced that the road will only be open to the public between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily, stressing that strict security protocols had been put in place to ensure safety throughout the temporary period.
“The Bonny–Bodo Road will not serve as a safe haven for criminal elements. Anyone caught engaging in criminal activity or attempting to compromise the security of Bonny LGA will face the full weight of the law,” Pepple warned.
The chairman said the council, working with security agencies and relevant federal authorities, is committed to ensuring that residents enjoy a peaceful and secure festive season.
Pepple commended the partnership with the Chairman of Gokana LGA, Hon. Confidence Nyima Deko, represented at the meeting by Vice Chairman Hon. Kpobari Bariziga Orage. He disclosed that both councils would jointly develop a comprehensive security blueprint to police their borders and safeguard commuters along the route.
He further noted that the Bonny Investment Promotion Committee, chaired by Warisenibo Tamunotonye Martins Brown, would soon release operational guidelines for businesses and transporters intending to operate along the road. These will include profiling of transporters, verification of vehicle documents, roadworthiness checks, and stakeholder consultations to determine fair transport rates.
“We will not permit any unidentified or unverified vehicle to operate along the Bonny–Bodo Road. Every transporter will undergo proper profiling to ensure accountability and safety,” he said.
