The long-awaited expansion of the Bonny Main Road has officially begun, with Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) and the Bonny Kingdom Development Committee (BKDC) unveiling EVOMEC Global Services Ltd as the contractor for the project.
The unveiling ceremony, held on Saturday, November 1, at the King Perekule Palace, marks a major milestone in NLNG’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative under the Train 7 project. The construction will cover the stretch from the former SPDC (now Renaissance) Gate to Coal Beach, with an additional link road from Amaomu Junction to the King Perekule Palace.
The road will be widened from 6 meters to 10 meters and feature dual drainage systems that will also serve as pedestrian walkways—improving safety and accessibility for residents and visitors.
Chairman of the Bonny Chiefs’ Council, Se-Alabo Dagogo Soala Claude-Wilcox, described the project as significant to Bonny Kingdom’s development. He expressed confidence in EVOMEC, urging the company to “write its name in the sands of time” by delivering a quality project. He pledged the full cooperation of the traditional leadership and encouraged open engagement with the community.
Chief Ifeanyi Umeh, who led the NLNG team, affirmed EVOMEC’s technical capability and readiness to execute the expansion to standard.
BKDC Secretary, Dr. Victor Ibigoni Jumbo, said the unveiling was delayed for over a year due to a rigorous due diligence process conducted to ensure alignment between plans and implementation. He assured that BKDC will closely monitor the construction to ensure strict adherence to specifications and timelines.
Representatives of EVOMEC, Director of Finance Otonye Idoniboye and Chief Engineer Toye Fadare, promised timely delivery and full compliance with all technical requirements. They appealed to the public for patience, acknowledging potential temporary disruptions during the construction period.
The first stage of the project will involve relocating utilities along the right of way, to be handled by the Bonny Utility Company (BUC).
The project is expected to be completed within 18 to 24 months.
