The Association of Television Cameramen of Nigeria (ATCAN), Rivers State Chapter, has strongly condemned the attack on one of its members, Mr. Promise Ibuchim of ARISE Television, Rivers State Bureau.
Mr Stephen Momoh, Chairman of ATCAN, Rivers State and Mr Paul Odion, Secretary of the association in a statement described the incident as an unwarranted and unprovoked assault carried out by unidentified persons armed with dangerous weapons, who reportedly invaded the venue of a live television interview in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The attack occurred during a live broadcast interview with a former Rivers State Commissioner for Employment Generation and Empowerment, Dr Leloonu Nwibubasa, being conducted by the ARISE Television production team.
ATCAN stated that journalists—including cameramen, reporters, and other production crew—are constitutionally and professionally mandated to gather and disseminate information to the public.
According to the association, the disruption of the broadcast, seizure of equipment, and intimidation of media personnel are unacceptable and undermine the public’s right to access information, regardless of the political, social, or cultural affiliations of those involved.
ATCAN described the incident as unfortunate, stressing that attacks on journalists pose a serious threat to press freedom and democratic engagement.
While sympathising with Mr Ibuchim, the association called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice. It also demanded full compensation for any broadcast equipment damaged or seized during the incident.
