The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced that the proposed online learning cannot work in Universities across the country. One of the reasons being that “the quality in terms of content and in terms of presentation will be watered down.”
President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi who made the revelation in an interview stated that the capacity requirement is another major factor why the online learning will not work in Nigerian universities.
He noted that online teaching require some special skills and training of lecturers who would be involved and giving them re-orientation, which takes time.
He said, “It (virtual learning ) will not work. Let’s break it down; when you talk of virtual learning practically online teaching and learning , I think the first question we need to ask ourselves is : do we have the infrastructure for that ? When you talk of infrastructures in the institutions concerned, do they have facilities and if you want to take it to individuals, can they afford it?”
