The Army Children School, located at Tombia Extension, GRA, Port Harcourt, is currently in a state of severe disrepair. During an unscheduled visit by ELANHUB, the infrastructure and environment of the school were assessed.
The visit revealed that the school is not only dilapidated but also experiencing a significant decline in student enrollment. This decline is attributed to the demolition of shanties in Casablanca and some makeshift structures around GRA, which previously housed many of the school’s pupils.
Additionally, the existing toilet facilities were found to be unsuitable for use.
It was discovered that the school is no longer under the jurisdiction of the Nigerian Army but is now managed by the Universal Basic Education (UBE) program, with funding from the state government.
Several staff members, who requested anonymity, indicated that although the school is supposed to receive funding, they have not received any financial support for over a decade despite numerous written requests and appeals for intervention.
Efforts are ongoing to reach the Commissioner for Education and the Director of UBE for further details regarding the situation.
