The management and staff of ARISE News Channel have announced the tragic death of their colleague, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie.
Sommie, a News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer with the station, was killed in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, during an armed robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja. She was 29 years old. The incident is currently under investigation by the Nigeria Police.
Born on December 26, 1995, Sommie was described by colleagues as a cherished member of the ARISE News family and a vibrant voice who connected deeply with viewers. Beyond broadcasting, she was also a lawyer, remembered as a professional, supportive colleague, and a true friend to many.
In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of management, ARISE News extended condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones.
“Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits,” the statement read.
Her passing has left colleagues, family, and friends devastated as tributes continue to pour in for the young journalist whose life was cut short in such tragic circumstances.
