The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has condemned the move by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, describing it as a “legislative coup d’état” against the collective interest of the party in the state.
The party’s position was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by Darlington Orji, spokesperson of the Emeka Beke-led faction of the APC. Orji described the actions of the lawmakers as unfortunate and warned that the development could become a dangerous footnote in the survival of the party in Rivers State.
According to the statement, the party had carefully analysed the events leading to the decision of the Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy, noting that the process amounted to an unnecessary legislative overreach.
“We have painstakingly analysed the issues leading up to the latest step taken by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to proceed with the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Odu,” the statement read.
“Regrettably, we note that honourable members who trumpeted loyalty to our party and Mr President have now given themselves to a choreographed legislative coup d’état against the collective interest, growth and development of our party in the state.”
Orji further warned that the continued recalcitrance of members of the House of Assembly, including those elected on the platform of the APC, could worsen political tension in the state and negatively affect the party’s fortunes.
He called on party members and stakeholders to exercise restraint and prioritize unity, stability, and the overall interest of the APC in Rivers State.
