The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, was notably absent from the Wreath Laying Ceremony held in honour of Nigeria’s fallen heroes.
The ceremony, organised as part of activities to commemorate Armed Forces Remembrance Day, brought together top government officials, security chiefs and other stakeholders who gathered to pay tribute to servicemen and women who laid down their lives in defence of the nation.
Amaewhule’s absence was conspicuous, especially as the nation paused to reflect on the sacrifices of its fallen heroes.
Observers linked the Speaker’s decision to stay away to the ongoing political crisis in the state, which has continued to deepen divisions within the political leadership.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed annually to recognise the courage, patriotism and sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel, past and present.
