Former Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has called on Nigerians to actively participate in the 2027 general elections to prevent President Bola Tinubu from securing a second term in office.
Amaechi made the call while speaking at the fifth anniversary lecture of First Daily newspaper held in Abuja on Monday, with the theme, “2027: How Can We Make Our Votes Count?”
He warned that voter apathy and complacency among citizens continue to fuel electoral malpractice, stressing that the people—not the government—hold the real power to reform the electoral system.
“The first solution to electoral reform is not the government. The people are the problem. The more you say they have written the results, the more you have voter apathy. Voter apathy will make President Bola Tinubu return to Villa,” Amaechi said.
He urged Nigerians to take ownership of the process and exercise their voting rights, insisting that President Tinubu is not invincible.
“Tell the people the power is in your hands. Come out. If Tinubu is that invincible, how was he defeated in Lagos?” Amaechi asked, pointing to Tinubu’s loss in Lagos during the 2023 elections as evidence that he can be defeated again.
