Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has explained why he participated in the “Occupy the National Assembly” protest alongside his son.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday in Abuja, Amaechi said he brought his son, a medical doctor, as a precaution in case the demonstration turned violent and participants sustained injuries
He emphasized that his presence reflected a conviction that leaders should stand physically with the people during major protests, rather than observe from afar.
Amaechi also urged Nigerians to rise up, calling on opposition parties—including the PDP and ADC—to join street protests against the Senate’s recent decision that he said threatens election transparency.
He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of resisting the electronic transmission of election results out of fear of losing elections. “If we come out and they say the opposition has hijacked the protest, what is the APC doing? Are they not hijacking? What are they afraid of? The only way a good politician will know he has done well is by the people,” Amaechi said
