Tomeka Thiam, the longtime wife of American singer and songwriter Akon, has filed for divorce after nearly 29 years of marriage.

According to court filings obtained by TMZ, Thiam submitted the petition on September 11, just four days before the couple’s 29th wedding anniversary. She cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the separation.

The couple, who married on September 15, 1996, share a 17-year-old child. Thiam is seeking joint legal and physical custody, as well as spousal support, while requesting that Akon be denied any financial support from her.

Thiam, a businesswoman and hairstylist, runs a beauty salon in Buckhead, Atlanta.

Akon, whose full name is Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, has previously spoken about his unconventional family life. He has multiple children with different women, a fact that has often drawn public attention to his relationships.
