Presidential aspirants under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are set to sign a unity agreement to support whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The agreement, which has been reached in principle, will also involve a joint definition of what constitutes a transparent and credible primary election. Former Minister of Transportation and leading member of the ADC coalition, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, confirmed the development in an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP Weekend.
The party’s interim national chairman, Senator David Mark, had earlier assured that the ADC would not favour any particular aspirant, emphasizing that the party under his leadership would uphold transparency and fairness throughout the selection process.
Mark’s assurance followed mounting interest in the party’s presidential ticket by prominent figures within the coalition.
Among the top contenders is former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who recently reaffirmed his 2027 presidential ambition during a meeting with Gombe stakeholders in Abuja. He has since denied reports suggesting he was asked to step down for a southern candidate.
Similarly, former Labour Party presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, confirmed in a recent interview that he intends to run again in 2027 and dismissed claims of negotiating to serve as a running mate.
Both Atiku and Obi were on a joint presidential ticket in 2019 and have continued to receive strong backing from their supporters across platforms.
Meanwhile, Amaechi, who lost the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket to President Bola Tinubu in 2023, has announced his intention to run under the ADC.
Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, also linked to the coalition, has publicly stated he is not nursing any presidential ambition.
The ADC is expected to finalize the unity pact in the coming weeks as the party intensifies preparations for a transparent and competitive primary process.
