Former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, has said the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) should be zoned to the South ahead of the next general election.
Amaechi made the position known during a meeting with ADC leaders in Kano State, where he stressed that presenting a southern candidate would improve the party’s chances of securing nationwide support.
According to him, while the party would still campaign if a northern candidate emerged, it would be challenging to persuade voters in the southern region to back such a candidate.
“If someone from the North emerges as the ADC candidate, I’m not saying we won’t campaign, but it will be difficult to convince the southern part of the country to support the person,” he said.
Amaechi added that beyond regional considerations, the party must focus on fielding its strongest contender — someone with the capacity and the age advantage needed to effectively challenge the incumbent president.
He, however, assured party members that he would support whoever emerges as the ADC’s presidential flagbearer, regardless of the zoning outcome.
