The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate termination of the state of emergency declared in Rivers State, criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s actions as unconstitutional and politically motivated.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the ADC fully aligns with recent remarks made by Vice President Kashim Shettima, describing them as a truthful reflection of the situation in the state.
The ADC accused President Tinubu of abusing constitutional provisions to advance a personal political agenda, insisting he lacked the legal authority to suspend an elected governor.
President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, in response to rising political tensions. The decision included the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly. In their place, the President appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as sole administrator for a six-month transitional period.
The ADC has now urged the federal government to reverse what it described as an unlawful imposition and to restore democratic governance in the state.
