The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has applauded President Bola Tinubu for declaring a nationwide security emergency and approving mass recruitment into the Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police Force.
The party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, stated this on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today. He said the ADC had long advocated for such measures, noting that although the decision came late, it remained a commendable step toward addressing Nigeria’s worsening security.
Abdullahi urged the government to ensure the declaration is backed by concrete actions, stressing that Nigerians expect results, not rhetoric. He criticised the administration for failing to protect citizens proactively, alleging that the government only acted after comments made by former U.S. President Donald Trump on Nigeria’s security situation.
President Tinubu, in an earlier statement, declared a security emergency and directed the army and police to recruit additional personnel. The police are expected to enlist 20,000 new officers, raising the total number of recruits to 50,000.
He added that although approval had previously been granted for the upgrade of police training facilities nationwide, the police leadership has now been authorised to use various National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as training depots.
The statement further disclosed that police officers withdrawn from VIP security duties will undergo crash training to prepare them for deployment to security-challenged areas, where they are expected to deliver more efficient policing services.
