The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his visit to polling units in Abuja during the Area Council elections, alleging that his actions amounted to interference and could intimidate voters.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party argued that the minister’s tour of polling centres — coming shortly after a curfew was imposed on residents — undermines the integrity of the electoral process.
According to the ADC, Wike’s presence at the polling units, which was described as a monitoring exercise, constitutes direct involvement in the election. The party maintained that as a cabinet member and a partisan political figure who is not registered to vote in the Federal Capital Territory, he has no constitutional responsibility in the conduct of the polls.
The statement also cited reports of alleged voter suppression and intimidation, including claims of cooperation between agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and certain security personnel.
While calling on its agents and supporters to stay composed, the ADC urged them to remain watchful and properly document any incidents observed during the election.
