A human rights activist Cheta Nwala has accused the Chairman of Etche Local Government Area of allegedly using his aides to issue threats and intimidate him over his public criticisms of the council’s administration.
In a statement circulated on social media, the activist claimed that some loyalists of the Chairman had sent him several threatening messages, including one in which a supporter allegedly vowed to attack him with thugs. He further alleged that the council boss himself had threatened to have him arrested and imprisoned.
“As at this evening, I have it on good authority that they have concluded their plans against me,” the activist stated. “But I am not one who is easily threatened because I believe nobody has a monopoly on anything.”
He maintained that his comments were within his constitutional rights to hold public officials accountable, adding that if the council Chairman felt defamed, “he should go to court rather than resorting to violence.”
The activist reiterated that criticism is part of public office and urged political leaders to accept public scrutiny with tolerance.
“If you don’t want people to criticize you, don’t hold public office because it is the hazard that comes with the job,” he said.
He concluded his statement by reaffirming his faith and courage, declaring: “I don’t fear he who has the ability to kill the body, but he who has the ability to kill the soul. In all, to God be the glory.”
As of press time, efforts to reach the Chairman of Etche Local Government Area for his reaction were unsuccessful.
