The Rivers State Government is set to begin demolition of shanties at the Abonema Wharf in Port Harcourt, today.
Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Hon. Allwell Ihunda said this in a chat with journalists while reacting to the fire incident at the Wharf on Friday.
According to him, investigations showed that the fire started as a result of stored adulterated petroleum products within illegal structures situated on the road to tank farms around the area.
He noted that the timely intervention of firefighters helped reduced the damage the fire would have caused.
Also, the State Commissioner for Special Duties, Emeka Onowu, who reacted to the inccident, said there may be no shanties at the Wharf by the end of today.
According to him, the fire incident was not the first, second or the third one in the area, noting that Friday’s own was the worst.
He stated that the fire showed that something fishy was going on in the area.
