The Nigerian Army has described as false and misleading an online report alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over issues relating to salaries and allowances.
Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Apollonia Anele in a press statement issued on Monday, said the publication, attributed to Sahara Reporters, was deliberately sensational and aimed at undermining public confidence and national security.
According to the statement, there has been no threat of mutiny within the Nigerian Army, stressing that mutiny is a grave offence under military law and completely alien to the institution’s core values of discipline, professionalism and loyalty.
The Army noted that the report relied on anonymous and unverifiable claims circulated through non-official channels, adding that such narratives do not reflect the views or conduct of its officers and soldiers. It explained that personnel are trained to channel grievances through established internal mechanisms rather than public platforms.
Clarifying issues surrounding remuneration, the Army stated that promotion increments represent only one aspect of military pay and should not be misrepresented as total earnings. It explained that military remuneration includes consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational allowances, field and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements that vary depending on deployment, qualifications and responsibilities.
The statement further revealed that the Nigerian Army, working with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government authorities, continues to implement structured welfare reforms. These include periodic salary reviews, improved operational allowances, better accommodation, enhanced medical care and comprehensive insurance packages for troops and their families.
It added that the Chief of Army Staff, upon assumption of duty, initiated engagements with appropriate authorities on troop welfare, a move which the Army said is already yielding positive results.
The Army also dismissed claims of neglect, stating that the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consistently shown commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, particularly amid evolving security challenges.
Reaffirming its position, the Nigerian Army said it remains a cohesive, disciplined and professional force focused on its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations.
The public was urged to disregard what it described as unfounded reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate information about the Armed Forces.
