The Coalition of Councillorship Candidates for Grassroots Governance in Rivers State has criticised the Rivers State House of Assembly over the commencement of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The assembly on Thursday initiated the process, accusing the governor and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, of gross misconduct, including alleged spending without legislative approval.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday and signed by its chairman, Akwu Jonathan, the coalition condemned the move, describing it as “lawless,” “morally bankrupt,” and “politically reckless.”
The group accused the lawmakers of abusing their constitutional powers in a bid to undermine the will of the people amid the lingering political crisis in the state.
According to the coalition, the impeachment attempt amounts to a “calculated plot to hijack governance through legislative brigandage” and represents a serious betrayal of public trust.
It maintained that the House of Assembly lacks the mandate to pursue the impeachment and called for an immediate suspension of the proceedings.
The coalition warned that if the lawmakers continue with what it described as an unlawful process, it would initiate a comprehensive recall action against members of the Rivers State House of Assembly involved in the move across their constituencies.
