The Rivers State Government says it will soon introduce a vehicle tracking system to strengthen efforts against car theft across the state.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara disclosed this on Thursday while receiving the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, at Government House, Port Harcourt.
Fubara noted that the initiative, being developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, will enable faster security response when vehicles are stolen.
According to him, the state will also expand support for the FRSC through the provision of additional vehicles and improved accommodation for its personnel.
The governor raised concerns over the shortage of police personnel and the poor state of security training facilities nationwide, explaining that his participation on the Presidential Committee on the overhaul of police training institutions is geared toward addressing those gaps.
He said although President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police personnel, adequate training infrastructure remains critical to their efficiency.
In his remarks, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed commended the governor’s support, noting that road crashes continue to claim about 2,000 lives annually in Nigeria. He said the corps is intensifying preventive strategies, including town hall engagements, to further reduce accidents.
