The Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, Chidi Lloyd, has announced plans by his administration to develop a cattle market and ranch within the council area.
Lloyd said the project, which will be implemented in partnership with livestock dealers and stakeholders, is aimed at providing a lasting solution to the persistent farmer-herder conflicts triggered by open grazing activities in parts of the local government area.
Speaking on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by members of the Rivers State chapter of the National Association of Cattle Dealers, Processors and Marketers of Nigeria (NACDPAMN), the council boss directed the Council Secretary, Engr. Victor Benjamin, to work with the association’s leadership to identify a non-residential site suitable for the proposed market and ranch.
According to Lloyd, the facility will include a modern abattoir, a fruit market, and space for commercial cattle ranching and livestock farming, providing opportunities for agricultural and economic growth. He added that the project is also expected to create jobs and transform Emohua into a commercial hub for livestock and farm produce.
In his remarks, the Rivers State Chairman of NACDPAMN, Chief Godspower Amadi-Eke, commended the council chairman for his proactive efforts toward resolving the farmer-herder crisis. He described the planned cattle market and ranch as a timely and strategic initiative that will not only curb open grazing but also boost the local economy by serving as a depot and distribution center for food products across neighboring areas.
