14-year-old student Fabian Chinda says he no longer feels safe returning to class, two weeks after the roof of the dilapidated Community Secondary School, Okoroagu, in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, collapsed on him.
According to NigrInfo a visit to the school revealed that all classrooms and staff offices in the Senior Secondary section are in deplorable condition with no windows or doors, and large portions of the roof caved in. Students are left to study under a partially open sky.
Fabian, who recounted the October 4th incident, said it happened on a rainy day shortly after their teacher stepped out of the class. As the rain intensified, students rushed to dry corners for shelter when part of the roof suddenly collapsed.
He told reporters he is still traumatised and often stays outside during classes out of fear that another section of the roof could give way.
Community members and parents are now appealing to the Rivers State Government to urgently rehabilitate the school and ensure a safe learning environment for the students.
