Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims by former Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, that he could fight corruption within one month if elected president.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Wike recalled that during Amaechi’s tenure as governor, the judiciary in Rivers State was shut down for nearly two years following a dispute over the appointment of a chief judge recommended by the National Judicial Council (NJC). He questioned Amaechi’s credibility to lead an anti-corruption campaign.
The minister further alleged that Amaechi was indicted by a judicial commission of inquiry for selling off state properties, a case which he pursued up to the Supreme Court and lost. He accused Amaechi of selling a state-owned gas turbine valued at over $3 million to Sahara Energy, investing about $30 million in the abandoned Karibi Whyte Hospital project, and spending N74 billion on a monorail project that failed to cover even a kilometre.
Wike also claimed that the state-owned legacy aircraft taken abroad under Amaechi’s administration has remained unaccounted for. He dismissed Amaechi’s anti-corruption remarks as “garbage.”
