Barely 24 hours after the Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, said anyone promising to serve just one term needs to see a psychiatrist, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reiterated his commitment to serving only one term if elected president in the 2027 general election.
In a statement released on Sunday, Obi declared that his promise to serve a single four-year term remains “sacrosanct,” dismissing doubts about his sincerity.
The former Anambra State governor said critics of his one-term vow were projecting their own standards onto him. He cited global figures such as former U.S. President John F. Kennedy and South Africa’s Nelson Mandela to buttress his point, noting that both leaders left lasting legacies without clinging to power.
“Nelson Mandela chose to serve only one term as president of South Africa despite intense public pressure. His decision was a deliberate act of leadership — that power must serve the people, not the self,” Obi stated.
The 2023 presidential contender is expected to run again in 2027 under the Labour Party platform.
