A 300-level student of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Julius Okpor, has been confirmed dead after he was shot by suspected cultists in the Rumuolumeni area of Port Harcourt on Saturday, July 20, 2025.
Spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Koko in a statement, said the attack occurred at about 11:30 a.m. near Cecilia Road in Rumuolumeni. Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim, a native of Okposi in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, may have been targeted by a rival cult group.
“The Rivers State Police Command received a report around 11:30 a.m. on July 20, 2025, concerning the fatal shooting of Julius Okpor, a 300-level student. Preliminary findings suggest cult rivalry as the cause of the attack,” she said.
She said the police have launched an investigation into the killing and assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend those responsible.
Also, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has condemned the act and appealed to residents to remain calm and support the police with credible information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
