The Rivers State Police Command has called on women to leave abusive relationships for their safety, as cases of gender-based violence (GBV) continue to rise across the state.
Spokesperson of the Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, gave the advice in an interview while reacting to a disturbing trend of violent attacks against women. She disclosed that at least six women have been assaulted or killed in the state this month alone, with some of the incidents sparking outrage and going viral on social media.
“No woman should remain in any relationship where she is being beaten, assaulted, or dehumanized,” SP Iringe-Koko stated, stressing the need for women to prioritize their well-being and seek help when faced with abuse.
Among the reported incidents is the case of a woman allegedly murdered by her husband in the Oyorokotor fishing settlement in Andoni Local Government Area. In another case, a woman was stabbed in the head by her lover. Three other women were reportedly assaulted during a nightclub altercation involving a well-known socialite, among others.
Police say investigations are ongoing in some of the cases, while others have already been charged to court. The Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice for victims and urged the public to report cases of abuse promptly.
